Here is a list providing a combination of newer and more established oceanside and soundside residential communities to give you an idea of what's on the Outer Banks. These communities include resorts and developments that offer recreational amenities and easy access to the ocean and sound, those that provide a mixture of both seasonal and year-round living, and neighborhoods with more of a year-round lifestyle. Most developments have strict architectural guidelines, or covenants, to ensure quality development. It should also be noted that there are many one-road (cul-de-sac) subdivisions scattered throughout the Outer Banks. Some of these subdivisions offer private roads and private ocean or sound access. Manteo, North Carolina - Manteo is indeed the cultural, commercial, and governmental center of Dare County. By no means a huge metropolis (all of 6,000 people call it home), it nonetheless is where all Dare County citizens eventually end up, either for entertainment or business or just plain visiting. The restored waterfront is a hub of retail activity, while across the harbor, the Roanoke Island Festival Park hosts dozens of cultural events and activities year-round. The nearby Lost Colony, the first outdoor drama in the US, brings about 1,100 visitors each night through Manteo, filling restaurants and shops until show time. The majestic Elizabethan Gardens are also on the island. |

Duck, North Carolina - The little resort village of Duck has a split personality. On one hand, it is a sleepy residential area for families craving a quiet beach vacation. Rental cottages and a few condominium complexes fill the village from sea to sound; there are no hotels and only one Bed and Breakfast Inn. On the other hand, there is the lively side of Duck. Cutting a swath through the heart of the village is a mile-long stretch of shopping heaven. Duck makes the most of its commercial area by packing as much as possible into one perfectly walkable area. Those staying elsewhere on the Outer Banks usually make a special daytrip to Duck to stroll, shop and eat when they've had enough fun in the sun. Just a handful of locals make Duck their home. |

Nags Head, North Carolina - Nags Head is a lovely seaside resort town that in recent years has also become a community with shops, stores and restaurants staying open year-round. When many people refer to the Outer Banks, they use the term ''Nags Head'' to generically describe the area. The truth of the matter is that Nags Head was first a physical location on a map, then a township, and finally, the most recognizable of all the northern Outer Banks vacation destinations. Nags Head is also home to a lovely golf course and Jockey's Ridge State Park. You can enjoy water sports and hang-gliding as well as some of the best fishing in the world, both in the shallow sounds and from the beach as well as off-shore with some of the local sport fishing boats. |

Ocean Sands is an oceanside and oceanfront planned unit development, considered to be a model of coastal development by land-use planners, government officials, and environmentalists alike. The Ocean Sands concept is centered around clusters of homes that form small colonies buffered by open space. This design eliminates drive-through traffic while increasing privacy and open vistas. Clusters are devoted to single-family dwellings, multi-family dwellings, and appropriate commercial usage. Many of the approximately 600 residences at Ocean Sands are placed in rental programs. Amenities include tennis courts, nature trails, and a fishing lake stocked with bass. The development has guarded private roads. Tucked within Ocean Sands is Ocean Lake, a little neighborhood with a 3-acre lake, tennis courts, and a large swimming pool. Ocean Sands is a family-oriented community buffered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the exclusive Currituck Club community. Site lots are approximately 6,000 square feet. |

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina - Kill Devil Hills is one of the most popular vacation destinations on the Outer Banks. With thousands of rental homes, great restaurants, sports and activities, and shopping, Kill Devil Hills is at the center of an Outer Banks vacation. But the area has a lot more than miles of beautiful pristine beaches - it is steeped in history, enhanced by legends and brimming with things to do! This is also the site of the Wright Brother's Museum, which recently held the 100 year First Flight Celebration. This is a rather select area in which to live, and although there are lots available and even some houses, the prices are steep, as land is limited and much of the area is protected. The homes here are beautiful and many of the newer ones have spectacular views of the Outer Banks. |
